                      Basic concepts

-revival of classical learning, humanism, age of discovery
 rise of printing, religious reformation (Luther, Calvin)
-sacred polyphony performed by choirs
-instrumental music often for homogeneous consorts
-rise of "cyclic mass" ordinary with unifying feature
   1. cantus firmus: same in each movement. sacred or secular
   2. paraphrase: altered melody, often appears in many parts
   3. parody: based on polyphonic original (chanson or motet)
-rise of freely-composed sacred Latin motet
-dominance of Netherlanders: Dufay, Ockeghem, Josquin, etc.
-differentiation of voice parts, expanded vocal range
-rise of Italian madrigal (through-composed) ca. 1530
-late Renaissance: Lasso, Palestrina, Byrd, Victoria
