Fifth Saturday/Sunday Singings

Annual singings scheduled for the Fifth Sunday or the Saturday before may occur in different months, depending on when fifth Sundays occur. While most Fifth Weekend singings are scheduled for, say, "the second fifth Sunday of the year," others may be determined by a special formula. The following is a schedule of fifth weekend singings for 1997, with scheduling information where available. This information is based on Sacred Harp Singings 1996 and 1997, compiled by Shelbie Sheppard and David Ivey.

First Fifth Weekend

March 29 and 30 Southwest Texas Convention--Bethel Primitive Baptist Church, on FM 713, McMahan TX, between Bastrop and Luling. Info: Tom Owen (512) 398-6075 or Curtis Owen (512) 398-2017 (Cooper Revision). (Spring Session: First fifth Sunday in the Spring, March or later).

March 30 Liberty Church--2 miles north of Henagar AL on Liberty Road, From Henagar Crossing, take Hwy. 40 west to the Farmers Telephone Cooperative. Turn right and go to dead end. Turn right, take first left past Henagar Methodist Church (Liberty Rd.). Church is on right, approximately 1.5 miles. (First fifth Sunday after first of year).

March 30 Parker, Hollis, Putman Memorial--Liberty (McCormick), 2 1/2 miles southwest of Sumiton AL north of New Hwy 78 or south of Old Hwy 78. (First fifth Sunday each year.)

Second Fifth Weekend

June 28 and 29 Midwest Convention--Chicago, IL. Info: Ted Mercer (312) 862-6477 or 486-7400. (First fifth Sunday and Saturday before, preceding July 4.)

June 29 Mount Pisgah, 10 miles southwest of Sylvester GA. (Second Fifth Sunday of each year.)

Third Fifth Weekend

August 30 (Saturday only) Young People's Singing--Old County Line Church, 9 miles west of Warrior AL near Corner, off Miller Road. (Saturday before first fifth Sunday after July 4; held at different locations.)

August 30 and 31 Union Musical Sacred Harp Convention--Camp Creek Primitive Baptist Church, Lilburn GA. I-85 north to Lilburn (Indian Trail Road); exit right, to Hwy 29 (Lawrenceville Hwy); turn right on Hwy 29 to first light, left on Main st, cross tracks. Church is about one mile past tracks. (First fifth Sunday, and Saturday before, after July 4.)

August 30 and 31 Southwest Texas Convention--Littlevine Primitive Baptist Church, 915 E. 52nd St., Austin TX, between Airport Blvd. and IH-35. Info: Gaylon Powell (512) 258-7080 or B. E. August 31 Lacy's Chapel--2 1/2 miles west of Henagar, Alabama on Hwy 40. (First fifth Sunday after fourth of July.)

August 31 Liberty (McCormick) Moon and Guthrie Memorial-- 2 1/2 miles southeast of Sumiton AL, north of new Hwy 78 or south of old Hwy 78. (Third fifth Sunday of each year.)

Fourth Fifth Weekend

November 30 New Hope Primitive Baptist Church--Martin Blackmon Memorial, one mile east of Villa Rica GA, just off Hwy. 78. (Last fifth Sunday in the year.)
