Sacred Harp Singing

The seventeenth annual all-day Sacred Harp singing at Oxford City Hall is planned for Sunday, March 9, 1997, beginning at 10:00 am sharp in the municipal court room. Dinner on the grounds will be shared at noon at the Senior Center next door. Local residents are invited to attend and participate in this community musical event, and also to bring a dish to help feed visiting singers. The singing, which attracts singers from Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, and other states, is sponsored by the City of Oxford and the Center for the Study of Southern Culture. The sixteenth annual Sacred Harp singing at Oxford City Hall was called to order by Warren Steel leading songs on page 138b and 36b. George Easley led the morning prayer. Mark Tew led songs on page 53 and 99, and the class organized by electing the following officers: Chairman, Warren Steel; Vice Chairman, Mark Tew; Secretary, Anne Steel; Arranging Committee, Mark Davis and Mel Kersey.
