| Patron-Initiated Purchasing Program The UM Libraries have begun a program that reviews Interlibrary Loan requests for possible purchase. Other libraries that have instituted similar programs have found this to be a cost-effective approach to meeting research needs while building their local library collections. Although ILL services are free to users, the library is often charged for borrowing materials from other libraries. When titles are available for purchase and meet UM’s collection development requirements, in many cases acquiring the titles for all library users is a better use of resources. The pilot phase of this program revealed the positive outcome of supporting interdisciplinary research. As a part of the purchasing review, the library takes into consideration the users suggestion for purchasing. Please note that a suggestion to “not purchase” will result in the library borrowing the title. If the user suggests purchasing the title, a number of criteria such as price, shipping estimates, and other collection development criteria are used to determine purchasing or borrowing. Please consider your choices for purchasing as well as the acceptability of an e-book format carefully. In general, purchasing does not increase the wait time and in some cases it is faster than borrowing. To-date library users have found this program helpful. When titles are purchased, it does allow for a longer check-out period and renewals. We hope users find this program beneficial. If you have questions or comments about this program, please let me know! |
Library ToolbarThe library now makes accessing the library catalog, electronic resources and other library-related services and tools even simpler! Using the LibX open source product, we were able to create a toolbar just for the University of Mississippi Library users. The toolbar is available for both Internet Explorer and FireFox users. In addition to providing a search box that searches the library catalog, WorldCat and our digital collections, it also provides linking and cueues. The toolbar help you to work more effectively and cut down on navigating to resources. For example, if you use Amazon.com, you can simply click on the library icon and it will search the library catalog for you. If it is not available in the library catalog, you can quickly click on the link to search WorldCat. From there, you can easily submit an ILL request. |
| Access to Electronic Resources Since 2000, the library has offered access to university faculty, staff and students from off-campus using a proxy server. The server requires that you enter your name and barcode (located on your university ID) to be authenticated. Those who register late or who have holds or late fees might also need to check with the circulation desk about their patron record and getting access from off-campus. Use of the proxy server has grown significantly over the past several years and this is clearly a critical service. The proxy is currently handling over 30.5 million hits annually. | |
| Library Catalog The library catalog remains a popular service among users. |
2010 Harvard Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians
I received an award to attend the 2010 Harvard Leadership Institute. It was definitely a growth experience. I setup an unoffical facebook group that for the 2010 class that currently has 42 members. It has been nice to stay in touch with classmates.
