When I was first asked about anxiety symptoms, I had no idea what the person was talking about. So I supposed I'd never had any. What, knot in the chest, vise around the throat, clammy palms--me? And, well, even if I had once or twice felt such things, what possible connection could it have with the life going on around me? And beyond that, with a book? Please.

Besides, why get all worked up over having nothing to read when there's all that good academic dope waiting at the party or conference or airplane or wherever? Most of us can get just as high on shoptalk and conference papers and the thrill of academic travel as we can on books. Heck, most of us get a hit just knowing that we can go anywhere and be smarter than most folks.
