Dr. Uddin was the first recipient of the University of Mississippi School of Engineering Faculty Service Excellence award in 2001. He has the honor to receive the inaugural Epps/Dart award for Excellence in Teaching in 2007 from the Deep South Section of Institute of Engineers (ITE).

Dr. Uddin is a member of Chi Epsilon (Civil Engineering National Honor Society), Order of the Engineer, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and Transportation Research Board (TRB), National Academies, Washington, DC, (93-04). He is TRB University Representative for the University of Mississippi (since 2004). He is a member of TRB committee AV070 Aircraft /Airport Compatibility and member of TRB Committee AFB80 Geospatial Data Acquisition Technologies in Design and Construction. He is founder member of the International Society of Asphalt Pavements and a life member of TexasEx (the Alumni Association of the University of Texas at Austin). He is a member of the ASCE-FHWA national task group on the LTPP data analysis contest and serves on the low volume road pavement manual of the ASCE Pavements Committee. He served as a liaison officer for Saudi Arabia and UAE during 1975-81 for Asian Information Center for Geotechnical Engineering, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). He was awarded a full scholarship by the government of the United Kingdom for graduate study at AIT during 1973-75.

At the University of Mississippi, Dr. Uddin has been awarded 4.6 million dollars software grant from geosptial industry in August 2009 and over three million dollars grant funds from external agencies (Mississippi DOT, USDOT, FHWA, NASA). His work on asphalt research was mentioned in the TEA-21 transportation bill passed by the US Congress in June 1998. Dr. Uddin has conducted sponsored projects on air quality modeling and use of tunable absorption lidar for measuring air pollution on a 4-year study (national consortium on remote sensing in transportation-environment applications) for USDOT, deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems technologies (ITS) in Oxford-Mississippi for US DOT, evaluation of airborne liaser technology for highway alignment design applications for NASA and Mississippi DOT, and improved pavement design procedures for the Mississippi DOT. He has conducted a university grant program sponsored by the FHWA during 1994-98 involving advanced simulations of vehicle impacts against roadside safety barriers. Dr. Uddin worked for the United Nations as a pavement expert during 1989-91. He implemented a road management system and established a Pavement Management Services Unit for Dubai Municipality in the United Arab Emirates. During 1987- 1989 as a senior pavement/materials engineer for the technical assistance team, Dr. Uddin had a leading role in the development of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) - Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) testing plans, and operational manuals.

Dr. Uddin has published over 220 papers, discussions and technical reports. He also developed pavement NDE software which have been used for road and airfield pavement projects in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, and abroad in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Dubai, Indonesia, Nigeria and Taiwan. Dr. Uddin has developed and conducted short courses on "Airport Pavements" (1987), "Pavement Management" (1992,1993), and "Microcomputer Applications in Pavements" (1993). Since 1993, he has been an invited lecturer on pavement nondestructive evaluation and maintenance management technologies for government agencies in Mexico. In April 1997, he served as a short course instructor on new pavement technologies offered at the Institute of Technology - Monterrey (ITESM) in Mexico. Dr. Uddin has established an international e-mail listserv, LTPP-L, at the University of Mississippi with the cooperation of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for worldwide information exchange on pavement research. He conducted the last LTPP Datapave workshop of 1998 for FHWA and ASCE on December 17, 1998 at the University of Mississippi. He offered short courses at Mackenzie university in Sao Paulo, Brazil on "Advanced Computer Simulations of Highway Pavements" (2000) and "Modern Asphalt Technologies" (2003).
