Dr. Waheed Uddin is professor of civil engineering at the University of Mississippi and the Director of Center for Advanced Infrastructure Technology (CAIT). Previously a pavement expert for the United Nations in the United Arab Emirates during 1989-91, he contributed to airport and highway projects in the United States and many other countries. Dr. Uddin received PhD in 1984 in transportation engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. He is a registered professional engineer in Texas since 1986.
Dr. Uddin has over 30 years of professional experience in highways, airports, sustainable development, and related areas of transportation engineering and infrastructure management. At the University of Mississippi he been teaching and conducting research in transportation and civil infrastructure, sustainable built-environment, and air quality management using computer simulations and airborne and spaceborne remote sensing technologies. He received grants at The University of Mississippi over three million dollars funded by the National Academy of Sciences, US AID, US Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Highway Administration, Mississippi DOT, and NASA/Mississippi Space Commerce Initiative. Dr. Uddin received the School of Engineering Faculty Service Excellence award in 2001 and the inaugural Epps/Dart award for Excellence in Teaching in 2007 from the Deep South Section of Institute of Engineers (ITE).
Dr. Uddin has published over 220 papers, discussions, and technical reports including three books, two book chapters, and 109 peer reviewed papers in refereed Journals and conference books. He is a co-author of "Infrastructure Management," published by McGraw-Hill in August 1997, Japanese edition published in 2001, and Chinese edition published in 2005. He contributed a chapter on pavement management systems in the CRC Highway Engineering Handbook published in 2006. His latest book chapter on transportation related greenhouse gases has been published in 2011 Springer "Climate Change Mitigation" handbook. He has been the Chief Editor of IJP – International Journal of Pavements since 2002. Dr. Uddin made over 170 presentations including 65 invited lectures and keynote speeches at national and international meetings worldwide in 27 countries.
Dr. Uddin has been the University of Mississippi representative for the Transportation Research Board (TRB) of the National Academies since 2004. He is a member of several technical committees of TRB and American Society of Civil Engineers. He chaired an international conference on maintenance and rehabilitation in 2001 in USA and co-chaired several conferences abroad. Dr. Uddin served as the Founder President of iSMARTi-international Society for Maintenance And Rehabilitation of Transport infrastructure during 2004-2007. The society co-sponsored the First International Conference on Sustainable Transport Infrastructuren, organized by the Chinese Academy of Transportation Sciences in Beijing, China, 24-26 April 2008.
