George Washington Taylor
On roll of prisoners surrendered at Citronelle, AL, May
4, 1865. Residence Trenton TN.
Enlisted July, 1864, near Trenton, TN, with Capt. A.T. Gay. Unit
remained in West Tennessee until January 1865. It was then
consolidated with Co. I of Russell's Regiment and later with
additional companies to become Co. E of the 19/20 Regiment. First saw
action near Tuscaloosa, AL in March 1865, as part of the Selma campaign.
Born about 10 miles west of Trenton, TN, he was the oldest of the 10
children of William M. and Mary Elizabeth (Patterson) Taylor. He
enlisted in July 1864 at age 17 and served until the end of the war.
He returned to his father's farm in Gibson Co. In March of 1868 he
married Nancy "Nannie" Roberts, who was the mother of 6 of his 9
children; later he married Ann Eliza Reach. He bought a small farm of
his own and was a farmer, county magistrate, Mason, a member of
Veterans of the Civil War and served on the road commission. Even as
an elderly man he continued each year to wear his Confederate uniform
on Veteran's Day to the Gibson Co. Fair. He died 25 July 1923 at age 76
and is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery which he was instrumental in
organizing.

Co. A of the 20th Cavalry as "they were coming out from Fort Pillow." Paroled at Gainesville, AL, in
1865, Taylor became a lawyer and lived at Trenton, TN.
In 1908, was kidnapped by night riders as a result of his business
dealings in the Reelfoot Lake area. The story is part of Night
Riders of Reelfoot Lake (Paul J. Vanderwood, Memphis State
University Press, 1969).

March, 1864 when he joined Russell's Regiment. Fought at Brices Crossroads and Harrisburg, where he was wounded. Paroled
at Gainesville, AL, in 1865. Became a lawyer in Trenton, TN, and served
Gibson Co. as probate judge, 1905-1910.
