"Jack" Pentecost was born October 2, 1843 near Cottage Grove, Henry County, TN. As an adult, he settled near Palmersville (Weakley County) where he bought a farm adjoining those of 4 of his brothers. On March 9, 1863 he married Hester Ann Clemonia Olds, with whom he had 10 children. Jack first attempted to enlist in 1861, when he was turned down for being only 17 years old. He was formally enlisted Sept. 1, 1863 by Captain Bowman at Cottage Grove, serving in Company K of the 20th TN cavalry. Jack took part in the Battle of Harrisburg, where he was wounded. An erroneous report that the wound was mortal caused his family to believe him dead until his return home at the end of the war. After recovering from his wounds, he returned to fight in Forrest's cavalry until they surrendered in April 1865 at what is now Guntersville, AL. At the end of the war, he returned to Palmersville and the farm, where he remained for the rest of his life. After the death of his wife Hester Ann in 1895, Jack married two more times: to Martha Ann Fields and to Laura Cotton, outliving both of them as well. Jack died on Dec. 7, 1918; he is buried with Hester Ann in the Blooming Grove Cemetery in Palmersville, Weakley Co, TN.
Married 1910, Laura Ann Witt Cotton, in Weakley Co. TN. Widow's pension file #11040.

Richard Pinson
Company E. Although Rennolds lists him as third sergeant of Co. E and says he was wounded at Brice's Cross Roads and died of smallpox, neither Tennesseans in the Civil War nor the National Archives has a listing for a Richard Pinson in this company. Indeed, the entry seems an amalgamation of three different Pinsons in the 20th -- Pvt. R.W. Pinson of Co. A; Pvt. T.J. Pinson of Co. E, who was wounded at Brice's Cross Roads, according to the service records and died of smallpox, according to family tradition; and T.M. Pinson of Co. E who was fourth, then later third sergeant.

Thadeus Jenkins Pinson was a tobacco farmer born in North Carolina who had moved to Henry and Carroll counties of Tennessee with his family when a boy. On Sept. 17, 1863, when about 40 years old, he was signed up for Russell's cavalry by 1st Corp. Reuben Bomer in Paris, TN, for a three-year enlistment. In the July 4, 1864, report of casualties in Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest's command, T.J. Pinson is listed as a casualty of the battle of Tishomingo Creek (Brice's Cross Roads) on June 10 and 11. The remarks on the service record card say "wounded severely back." Family tradition says he was wounded by a cannister ball, was taken to a hospital and died when smallpox settled in the wound. He left behind in Henry County a widow, Ann Eliza (Beasley) Pinson, about 28, and a son Thomas Courtney Pinson, 6.

Thomas M. Pinson was about 32 when Capt. Fields signed him up on Dec. 1, 1863, in Marlsboro (Marboro?), TN, for a three-year enlistment. One of his service cards says he rode a grey horse valued at $600. His card for March and April 1864 says he was fourth sergeant, and his card for May and June says he was third sergeant. After that, there are no more cards in his service records and no explanation as to why. The 1860 Census lists him as living in Carroll County with a wife named Henrietta, who was 24 at the time, a daughter named Nancy A., who was two months old at the time, and another woman named Mary Wood, who was 17. He's not listed in the 1870 Census of Tennessee. Brother of T.J. Pinson.
