John Williamson Harris
Born 1848 in Carroll
Co.,TN. He ran away from home in 1863 and joined the army at Jackson and served with the
20th Tenn. Cav. He was on courier duty most of the time, but took
part in the battle of Harrisburg and a
number of skirmishes.
He stated on his pension record that he was an orderly for Col.
Russell and Lt. Col. Greer.
At the time of Lee's surrender he was on scout duty in North
Carolina. After the war he came to Oklahoma and worked as farmer,
school land officer, 1st mayor of Guymon, OK., superintendent of
Conf. home in Ardmore, OK., Commander of Ok. Div. of U.C.V.,
commissioner of Ok. Conf. pensions, National Chieftain of Conf. Vets.
in June of 1942. Died Feb. 20, 1943 at 94 years.

Charles T. Herrin
Tennesseans in the Civil War lists a 1st Lieutenant Charles
T. Herrin of the 20th Cavalry. Culp & Ross (1961), among others, report
that a "Tobe" Herron was an original Lieutenant of D Company. The
compiled service records only list J.W. Herron in
Russell's 20th. There is a Charles T. Herrin of Lawrence Co. Tennessee
in the "other" 20th Cavalry microfilm. It is unclear whether there are
one or two individuals described.
