CHE 510 - PLANT DESIGN
Spring 2003
Homework Assignments
(All problems are individual unless otherwise noted. Use Mathcad only when necessary, eg, to find solutions of implicit equations.)
Write a short (less than 5 pages, double spaced) description of paper manufacturing. Provide all references. Due: January 21.
Chap 11. 8 (estimate areas as well)
Chap 12: 5 (For this problem, notice that if the area increases, the oil outlet temperature is not fixed. The oil inlet temperature and flow, and the steam temperature remain constant.) 8, 11,
23 (For this last problem, use the McCabe-Thiele method and assume ideal solution behavior. With the actual feed tray location and other operating conditions known, find the number of stages required. The problem now is to find the new reflux ratio and the optimum feed tray which gives the same number of stages as found before, keeping distillates and bottoms rates the same. You may assume 8000 hours/year. Also, since the feed is saturated liquid, you can easily determine the boil-up rate.)Chap 13: 1, 4, 10 (These are group problems; HYSYS should be used for 4. Assume the column pressure is 250 kPa, and constant throughout. This should allow you to get the temperatures given in the table on p. 339. You may not be able to match all the conditions exactly, but you should come close.
Two articles appeared in March 2002 issue of Chemical Engineering on heat exchangers (G. T. Polley, "Cast Heat
Exchangers in a Leading Role," p. 56, and A. E. Jones, "Thermal Design of Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchangers," p.60). Read
theses articles and submit a memo briefly summarizing the main points. Note, in particular, any items that differ from
information you received in this or any other class.
Chap 14: 4, 9, 13
Chap 15: 2, 8
Chap 16: 5, 8, 12
