CHE 451 PLANT DESIGN
Fall 2004
Homework Assignments
(All problems are individual unless otherwise noted.)
Due August 31: Provide the name of the group leader and the regular meeting times and locations of the group.
Chap 1: 4, 8, 14
Chap 2: 2, 13 (group), Do problem 5 for the allyl chloride process in Appendix C. Determine the profit margin for this process.
Chap 3: Identify the main reactant and product chemical pathways for the allyl chloride process. Identify the main recycle and bypass streams for the allyl chloride process. Do problem 1.
Chap 4: For the allyl chloride process, construct a process conditions matrix, identify areas of special concern, suggest one reason why each condition was used, and suggest a process alternative to eliminate that condition. (Group problem.)
Chap 5: 4, 5, 12
Chap 6: 2, 6, 10
Chap 7: 5, 8, 22
Chap 8: 4, 9, 35, 33 (NOTE: Do problem 35 first, and check your answer against those in the book. Look, too, at the "Hint" for problem 33. To get CAPCOST to do these Monte Carlo calculations, you must first go to the COM Summary sheet and enter the appropriate values there. All the revenue comes from the price of the product; all the manufacturing cost comes from the cost of the raw materials. Labor and utilities should have a value; you can make them each1. Make certain the "Base Values" in the Monte Carlo simulation worksheet agrees with the ones you put in under COM Summary.)
Chap 9: 2
Chap 10: 14.
Chap 11: 1, 5 What is the difference in column T-101 in this process between shortcut and rigorous distillation?
Group: Do Example 11.3 using PRO/II. Determine the method that gives the most accurate predictions for this problem.
Chap 21: 6, 13
Chap 22: 8
