Freshmen Laboratory Program in Biology
University of Mississippi Freshman Laboratory Program in Biology
The program provides laboratory classes for first year science majors and for non-science majors. For both the major and non-science majors we seek to expose students to some o the diversity of the living world, the basic principle of modern biology and provide tools for understanding some of the complex questions facing individuals in our society.
Coordinator of the Freshman Laboratory Program
Labs are taught by Teaching Assistants and occasionally by Instructors.
Questions about the program should be
directed to Dr. Stratton
What classes are part of the Freshmen Laboratory Program in Biology?
For students who are science majors, we offer a two course sequence that is a co-requisite with the Introductory Biology for majors.
In the fall and summer, we offer Bisc 161. The lecture class, Bisc 160 is a co-requisite.
In the spring and summer, we offer Bisc 163. The lecture class, Bisc 162 is a co-requisite.
For students who are non-science majors, we offer two courses, both offered in fall and spring as well as in the summer:
Bisc 103: Human Biology: Inquiry into Life Laboratory
(the lecture class, Bisc 102 is a co-requisite to Bisc 103)
Bisc 105: Diversity and the Environment: Inquiry into Life Laboratory . (The lecture, Bisc 104 is the co-requisite for Bisc 105.)

Frequently Asked Questions:
How do I know which class to take?
If you are intending to major in one of the sciences, such as biology, chemistry or physics, or if you are in the pharmacy program, you should take the Bisc 160/161 and Bisc 162/163 sequence. Students who are pre-med or predent should also take this sequence.
If you are a non-science major, you should probably take the Bisc 102/103 and Bisc 104/105 sequence. These classes seek to teach general biology from an issues perspective.
How can I find out who teaches the lab section I am taking?
Check the course web pages. Each web page includes photos of all of the TAs as well as a schedule of when they are teaching.
We also keep a schedule on the bulletin board near where the labs.
If I have to miss a lab (because of illness or a family emergency), can I make up the lab?
Labs can only be made up during the week in which they are offered. To arrange for a make-up lab, check the TA schedule on the course web page, and pick the section you would like to attend. Contact the TA of that section by emailing them to ask if you can join their lab. Last but not least, contact your own TA to let them know you will be attending a different section.
I have forgotten my TAs name and emailhow can I find it?
Click on the Information about TAs on your course web page.
Who do I see if I have problems with my schedule or conflicts in the class?
